Hamlet and Ophelia by the Sea

Painted in 1987, Harbour Lights 4 belongs to a mature period in Edwards’ career, when memories of harbours, coastlines and maritime structures were translated into richly textured abstract compositions.

Executed in acrylic on heavy wove paper, the work combines bold areas of colour with heavily worked surfaces and energetic linear marks. Rather than describing a specific location, Edwards evokes the experience of a harbour through simplified forms, rhythmic pattern and a carefully balanced arrangement of colour.
