John Edwards

John Edwards (1938–2009) was an important figure in post-war British abstraction. Educated at St Martin’s School of Art, where he later became Professor of Painting, Edwards developed a distinctive visual language that combined powerful colour, textured surfaces and simplified forms. Although rooted in observation, his paintings increasingly transformed remembered landscapes and coastal environments into abstract compositions built from shape, rhythm and colour.

Within Sharpe Fine Art’s exhibition narrative, Moving to Modernism – Arriving at Abstraction, Edwards represents a later generation of British abstraction. His work demonstrates how artists continued to draw inspiration from landscape while moving beyond direct representation towards expressive structures of colour and form.
