Ben Nicholson was one of the principal architects of British abstraction, whose lifelong search for harmony through line, proportion, and form transformed the course of twentieth-century art. Although rooted in observation, his mature work increasingly distilled landscape, architecture, and still life into compositions of remarkable simplicity, creating a visual language that profoundly influenced generations of British artists, particularly those associated with the St Ives School.

Turkish Forms with Leaves belongs to Nicholson’s mature graphic practice, when his printmaking achieved an exceptional balance of precision and lyrical freedom. Inspired by motifs encountered during his travels, the composition combines stylised botanical forms with geometric structures, creating an image that is both architectural and organic.

Delicately incised lines define a central leaf and surrounding ornamental shapes, while the asymmetrical arrangement creates a quiet sense of movement and equilibrium. Nicholson avoids conventional illusionistic depth, instead encouraging the viewer to consider the subtle relationships between line, space, and proportion.

This impression is uniquely distinguished by a fascinating archival duality characteristic of the legendary Nicholson-Lafranca partnership in Locarno, Switzerland. On the reverse, the sheet bears the master printer’s original workshop ledger mark, “No.3”, recording its sequence coming directly off the press. Upon delivery to the artist, Nicholson flipped the sheet to hand-sign, date, and uniquely inscribe the face as “artist’s copy no. 1”—effectively claiming this third studio pull as the primary, premier copy for his personal archive. Rather than a contradiction, this dual numbering serves as an intimate record of the print’s journey through the hands of both master printer and artist.

Its subsequent provenance from a private Swiss collection directly mirrors the tumultuous end of Nicholson’s Swiss period in 1971. Left behind during his sudden return to the UK, this pristine archive copy was preserved for decades within an elite Swiss collection, making its emergence on the contemporary British market a major event for collectors of the St Ives School.
