The Porthmeor Beach Suite (Parts I - IV)

Created during the final years of Sandra Blow’s career in St Ives, The Porthmeor Beach Suite represents an exceptionally rare surviving group of four related watercolours. Rather than depicting the Cornish coast directly, Blow distils the shifting light, tide and atmosphere of Porthmeor Beach into a sequence of luminous, highly restrained abstract compositions.

Each sheet explores a different rhythm of translucent washes, subtle blues and soft greys, with delicate passages of line and colour suggesting reflections across wet sand, sea and sky. Individually the works are beautifully resolved; together they form a continuous meditation on place, inviting the viewer to experience the changing qualities of light over time.

Sandra Blow increasingly worked in series during her later career, allowing ideas to develop across multiple works rather than within a single composition. The survival of this suite, with shared provenance and matching presentation, is therefore particularly significant. It offers an insight into the artist’s mature practice and her lifelong engagement with the landscape of St Ives.

Historical Context

Executed in 2000, these watercolours belong to the final phase of Blow’s career, when she had returned permanently to St Ives. During this period she reduced her visual language to its essentials, exploring light, space and the changing coastal environment through increasingly economical means.
